About Exocin® Eye Drops

Rating of sales:

Exocin® Eye Drops are manufactured by Allergan. The key component is Ofloxacin – a 2nd generation antibiotic from the Fluoroquinolone (or Quinolone) family with a broad-spectrum activity against susceptible organisms.

- bacterial eye infections (conjunctivitis, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, and blepharitis).

Do not use Exocin® Eye Drops to treat a viral or fungal infection of the eye.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Ofloxacin is a synthetic antibacterial drug. It works by inhibitng DNA gyrase (type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV) – an enzyme crucial for separation of the replicated DNA. Thereby, Ofloxacin prevents bacterial cell division. This results in bacteria death and elimination of the infection. Ofloxacin effectively fights Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Propionibacterium acnes, Enterobacter cloacae, Haemophilus influenzae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens.

For bacterial eye infections:

Conjunctivitis: during days 1-2 instill 1 to 2 drops every two to four hours in the treated eye(s) during first two days; during days 3-7 instill 1 to 2 drops four times daily.

Corneal ulcer: instill 1 to 2 drops in the treated eye(s) every 30 minutes, while awake (awaken at four and six hours after sleeping and instill 1 to 2 drops); during days 3-7 to 9 instill 1 to 2 drops hourly, while awake; during days 7 to 9 instill 1 to 2 drops, four times daily.

In severe infections, apply 2 drops into the treated eye(s) hourly until improvement is obtained following which treatment should be reduced.

Ofloxacin solution is not for injection.

Ofloxacin solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Prolonged use of Exocin® Eye Drops may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue using these drops and institute alternative therapy.
